Flight 2494 was preparing for departure to Indianapolis when "a bullet apparently struck the right side of the aircraft under the flight deck", a Southwest spokesperson told the BBC's US partner, CBS News.

“More than just names and ranks, they were role models, trailblazers, and women whose influence touched countless people on the flight deck and well beyond,” Navy officials said in a statement.

They were dropped back into the sea by the ship's crew, who had gathered on the flight deck to watch.

The experiment, conducted by researchers from the University of Washington, involved spraying tiny sea-salt particles across the flight deck of a decommissioned aircraft carrier, the U.S.S.

The FAA confirmed Friday that officials are investigating the incident, as an unauthorized person allowed access to the flight deck violates federal regulations, an FAA spokesperson wrote in an emailed statement Friday.
