The government says the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned in 2030 – but will it?

There has been a growing row between the government and the industry over the sale of new petrol and diesel cars being phased out over the next few years.

In countries lacking oil reserves, syngas derived from coal or natural gas is critical for making diesel and gasoline fuels.

The BBC understands that, while the government remains committed to meeting Labour’s manifesto target of ending sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, it is willing to consider changes to the mandate.

The company currently makes diesel engines for vans at its Dagenham factory in Essex.
