After receiving a degree in graphic design from a trade school, Gonzo had a quick stint as a tattoo artist before spending two decades in advertising, eventually working for multiple companies owned by famed comic artist Todd McFarlane.

His Dr Slump series that started in 1980 became a huge hit, elevating him to a best-selling young comic artist.

The voice of legendary comic artist Carmine Infantino, a leading figure at DC Comics for decades who is credited with redefining Batman’s iconography, appears briefly via a character that also looks like him and whose coffee is ruined by Poison Ivy.

The artist and art director died “peacefully in his sleep” Monday morning, said his son, comic artist John Romita Jr., on Tuesday on Twitter and Instagram.

“He was arguably a comic artist for a longer period of time than anyone else in history, and yet he never once lost his delight in juvenile irreverence or his sick and twisted sense of humor. If anybody working in comedy today tells you they weren’t influenced by Al Jaffee in some way, they’re obviously lying.”
