The city’s “resistance committee”, made up of volunteers who try to bring aid locally to those caught up in the conflict, says more than 30 people were killed on Sunday in a military airstrike on a mosque.

The U.S. pier project to bring aid to Gaza via the Mediterranean Sea has had a troubled launch, with groups of people overrunning a convoy Saturday and taking most of the supplies and a man in the crowd who was shot dead in still-unexplained circumstances.

Paying tribute to those killed, Mr Sunak said: "To think these were brave Brits who were risking their lives to bring aid to people in need in Gaza... to have lost their lives in these circumstances is a tragedy. My thoughts obviously are with their families."

The group is a relatively new aid provider in Gaza, but it has garnered notice by making bold moves, like building a jetty out of rubble to bring aid in by sea.

The United States has also announced a plan to build its own temporary floating pier to bring aid into Gaza, but it could take weeks to build.
