American explorers discovered the North Pole later than you might think: It wasn’t until 1909 that Admiral Robert Peary became the first person to plant a flag in the Arctic frost.

In one place a gaily striped shade, which flapped and fluttered in the wind, had been stretched above the window of an ambitious store; but with this exception the unlovely wooden buildings boldly fronted the weather, with the sun-glare on their thin, rent boarding and the roofing shingles crackling overhead, as they had done when they had borne the scourge of snow-laden gales and the almost Arctic frost.

The man who has tried his strength too hard in the Arctic frost may char his boots in the camp-fire, but he cannot get warm.

There was not a breath of wind astir, and the pines cut sharp and black against the luminous blueness of the night without the faintest quiver of a spray, for that afternoon an Arctic frost had descended upon the valley.

But the wind fell at night, and when dawn broke they set out again in Arctic frost.
