The “Transformers” star, whose acting career has been tainted for years by alcoholism, abuse allegations and arrests, , was officially confirmed into the Catholic Church on New Year’s Eve.

Upton believes that the impact of the massacre can be seen throughout his family tree, which has been plagued by alcoholism, abuse and betrayal.

“Yet my grandfather rarely talked about his experience as a soldier. Like Marcus, he had been trained to keep his emotions under tight control. But like a steel pot with a wicker top, those feelings eventually bubbled to the surface. In my house, they were expressed as anger, depression and self-esteem issues. But for other veterans, the feelings are too intense and manifest themselves as unhealthy behaviors like alcoholism, abuse, depression, rage or suicide—problems that often become multi-generational, passing from parent to child and on.”
