desechar, verb:
to throw out; to dispose of
Desechar is another word which has a figurative meaning which is probably more common than the literal meaning. Literally, it refers to throwing out something, such as the garbage:
desechar la basura
to throw out the garbage
It can also be used to refer to disposing of other things:
electrodomésticos desechados
electrical appliances which have been disposed of
More often you’ll find it used metaphorically, to mean to reject an idea, thought, or suggestion.
El director desechó la proposición.
The director rejected the proposal.
Se discutió y se desechó la enmienda de los socialistas.
The socialist amendment was discussed and rejected.
