"P—o—p—e, Pope," she spelt out of her infants' primer in Brum's hearing.

“These letters ‘P. O’ are made the same as the ones we saw in the old church,” Brad declared, studying the knife cuts closely.

On the wall, freshly cut with a sharp knife, were the carved initials: “P. O.”

This name, too, had associations with the old Hun tradition; it recalled the state of Ho-lien P'o-p'o in the early fifth century.
