In his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, King emphasized how we are “caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”

At root, it is about the mutuality of political neutrality: the military’s obligation to be apolitical and the concomitant obligation of civilian officials not to politicize the military.

Giving Tuesday, as one of the movement’s leaders put it, promotes “generosity not as a benevolence that the haves show to the have-nots but rather an expression of mutuality, solidarity and reciprocity.”

It took cannibalism and surviving the wilderness for the Yellowjackets to arrive where we are today: wary of each other, opting for individualism rather than mutuality.

For mutuality as well as for dignity and respect.
