Death was declared an eternal sleep; God was declared a fiction, the Sabbath was abolished and religious worship denounced.

Over the entrance of their grave yards was placed this inscription, "Death an eternal sleep."

His dying words were: "Sprinkle me with perfumes, crown me with flowers, that I may thus enter upon eternal sleep."
