Speaking of comedic voice, why do you feel like the style of comedy you’re bringing to this awards show is necessary right now for the country?

For his latest venture, Torres made his way to the stage — admittedly not knowing exactly what goes on in the theater, but willing to take a shot with his first comedic play, “Color Theories.”

If you look at the roles he’s done that are comedic, whether it’s in “Bill & Ted” or in “Parenthood,” there’s this innocence, this sweetness and this kindness that’s in there.

The songs were still comedic — “Everything I write winds up a little warped,” he says — but were original tunes that were pastiches of, say, Frank Zappa or They Might Be Giants’ style.

“You don’t want to witness that mutually assured destruction, but you’re also enjoying the madness of the comedic farce,” Cumberbatch says.
