Sothis

This period, measured thus by the heliacal rising of Sothis, is spoken of as the Sothic cycle.

The Egyptians worshipped the star as Sothis, and it was believed to be the abode of the soul of Isis.

Hence the priests of Lower Egypt commenced the reign of the seven great gods with the beginning of a Sothis period.

Then followed, beginning like the rest with the beginning of a Sothis period, the rule of human kings.

The beginning of the inundation of the Nile was marked by the rising of the star Sothis or Sirius.
